The Boulder Valley Dressage Youth Connection is group of young riders-really, a group of horse-crazy friends- that meets once a month to have fun and learn. Every meeting is hosted at a different local barn and has a different educational topic. The January meeting topic was the Basics of Dressage. For some attendees, the presentation was a review and for some of the members it was a first look into the intricacies of the sport. No matter what the experience level of the audience member was, there is no doubt that it was enjoyed. The two presenters, Shannon Dahmer and Jasmin Becker, and their Grand Prix horses, Romie and Viva Las Vegas, put on a thorough demonstration of the levels of dressage without getting stuck in detail and made the content accessible for members of all levels and ages.

The program demonstrated the progression of the dressage horse up the training scale. The concluding actwas a fun pas de deux choreographed by the riders themselves and set to techno music. This was an exciting way to show the fun stuff that comes after years of hard work and to remind those present who ride dressage what they are working for.
In addition to the demonstration, the evening at Lanas & Julie Smith’s Lookout Ridge Farm contained lots of chatting time, excellent pizza, fun ice breakers to introduce new members to some of the unfamiliar faces and a video of a horse show filmed in Germany. The evening was attended by 30 people. Previous meeting topics have included subjects such as conformation of the sport horse and grooming and braiding for dressage shows. The next meeting features an Introduction to Equestrian Vaulting Clinic. Youth members can participate in basic exercises under the guidance of an American Vaulting Association coach. For those not quite ready for that, auditing is an option. This group is a great way for youth and their parents to involved in the dressage community. No dressage experience is required and neither is horse ownership or any riding experience. The only requirement is to bring a love for horses and a mind open for learning.
